Atari 1200XL, USA, 1983. Přinesl novou nízkou skříň, velmi kvalitní klávesnici, klávesu HELP, čtyři programovatelné funkční klávesy a vestavěný diagnostický Self Test. Grafiku stále zajišťují ANTIC a GTIA, zvuk POKEY. Vysoká zaváděcí cena 899 dolarů a krátká životnost z něj udělaly jeden z méně běžných osmibitových Atari.
English / Anglicky:
Atari 1200XL, USA, 1983. The first model of the XL generation was introduced as a more modern and stylish successor to the Atari 800. It uses the SALLY version of the 6502 at 1.79 MHz with 64 KB RAM. New features included a low profile case, an excellent keyboard, a HELP key, four programmable function keys and built in Self Test diagnostics. ANTIC and GTIA still handle graphics while POKEY provides sound. Its revised operating system caused compatibility problems with some older software, BASIC was not built in and the machine lacked the later PBI expansion bus. The 1200XL was sold only for the North American NTSC market. Its high US$899 launch price and short production run make it one of the less common Atari 8 bit models.

I purchased my Atari 1200XL from Buenos Aires, Argentina, in January 2021 for US$376 including shipping. It arrived with its keyboard membrane already refurbished, so the keyboard restoration was not my own work. The only modification I made was to enable a usable +5 V supply at the SIO connector for a cassette recorder powered through SIO. Unlike other Atari 8-bit computers, the 1200XL has a factory-fitted 100-ohm current-limiting resistor, R63, in the supply to SIO pin 10. We bridged R63 during testing, allowing the pin to deliver sufficient current, after which the cassette recorder began responding. This is a documented peculiarity of the 1200XL.
