Proti HP-85 nemá vestavěný monitor, tiskárnu ani datovou jednotku a je koncipován jako základ pro externí profesionální sestavu. HP-86B má 128 KB RAM a lze jej rozšířit až na 576 KB. Vestavěná Electronic DISC ROM umožňuje využívat část RAM jako rychlý elektronický disk a standardní HP-IB připojuje disketové a pevné disky, tiskárny, plottery i měřicí přístroje. Obraz na externím monitoru nabízí 80 × 24 znaků a monochromatickou grafiku 544 × 240 bodů. Čtyři modulové pozice dovolují doplnit například RS-232, HP-IL, GPIO, modem nebo další paměť. Základní cena HP-86B byla v roce 1983 1 595 dolarů.

Hewlett-Packard HP-86B, USA, 1983. This modular Series 80 technical computer uses HP's proprietary 8 bit Capricorn processor at 625 kHz. Unlike the HP-85 it has no built in monitor, printer or storage device and is designed as the core of an external professional system. The HP-86B has 128 KB RAM and can be expanded to 576 KB. Its built in Electronic DISC ROM allows part of RAM to operate as a fast electronic disk, while standard HP-IB connects floppy and hard disks, printers, plotters and laboratory instruments. External video provides 80 × 24 text and 544 × 240 monochrome graphics. Four module positions can add RS-232, HP-IL, GPIO, modem or more memory. The base price of the HP-86B was US$1,595 in 1983.
