Plantron PT-80 jr, Hongkong a Západní Německo, 1984. Počítač tak vzácný, že jsme na začátku pátrání neměli k dispozici ani jeho kompletní manuál, ani originální software či veřejně použitelný emulátor. Teprve zkoumání skutečného exempláře odhalilo, že nejde jen o záhadný název ze staré reklamy. Deska nese označení PT 80jr., Plantron Computer Ltd., Hong Kong, 1984, Rev B. V počítači pracuje NEC D780C-1 kompatibilní se Z80, grafický řadič TMS9929A a zvukový SN76489. Při spuštění systém hlásí 32 KB pracovní RAM a 16 KB videopaměti, tedy celkem 48 KB. Tři EPROM 2764 obsahují dohromady 24 KB původního firmwaru PLANTRON BASIC V1.1. Po zapnutí se nejprve pokouší zavést systém z diskety a teprve při neúspěchu přechází do BASICu. Rozbor ROM ukázal zaváděcí rutiny odpovídající zamýšlenému provozu CP/M, ale originální systémovou disketu ani plně běžící CP/M zatím nemáme ověřené. Vedle konektorů pro monitor, televizor a kazetu má Plantron také rozhraní pro cartridge, tiskárnu, rozšíření a externí diskovou mechaniku. Podrobný průzkum jeho elektroniky i softwaru pokračuje, protože tento model nelze automaticky zaměňovat za větší Plantron PT-80.

Plantron PT-80 jr, Hong Kong and West Germany, 1984. This computer is so rare that, when our investigation began, we had no complete factory manual, original software collection or publicly usable emulator. Examination of the surviving machine has now provided firm evidence beyond the few period advertisements. Its PCB reads PT 80jr., Plantron Computer Ltd., Hong Kong, 1984, Rev B. The computer uses an NEC D780C-1 compatible with the Z80, a TMS9929A video controller and an SN76489 sound chip. Its startup display reports 32 KB of system RAM and 16 KB of video RAM, a total of 48 KB. Three 2764 EPROMs hold 24 KB of original PLANTRON BASIC V1.1 firmware. On power up the machine first attempts to boot from floppy disk and falls back to BASIC if no bootable system is found. ROM analysis has identified a loader consistent with the intended use of CP/M, but an original system disk and a fully running CP/M installation have not yet been verified. In addition to monitor, television and cassette connections, the machine has cartridge, printer, expansion and external disk interfaces. Investigation of its hardware and software continues, and the smaller PT-80 jr must not be confused with the differently advertised PT-80.

Náš exemplář / Our machine
Můj Plantron PT-80 jr jsem koupil jako neodzkoušený stroj za 330 dolarů, bez původního zdroje, dokumentace a softwaru. Po zprovoznění jsme z desky identifikovali procesor NEC D780C-1, grafiku TMS9929A a zvukový obvod SN76489. Startovací obrazovka prozradila 32 KB systémové RAM a 16 KB videopaměti. Přečetli jsme všechny tři EPROM 2764 a rozebrali původní BASIC i zavádění z diskety. Z jejich obsahu jsme postupně vytvořili vlastní emulátor, který umí spustit původní firmware. Vedle toho jsme začali převádět hry z počítače Tatung Einstein TC-01. Upravený Manic Miner jsme vyzkoušeli i na skutečném Plantronu včetně hudby a ovládání. Hledání původní systémové diskety a dokumentace diskového rozhraní stále pokračuje.
I bought my Plantron PT-80 jr untested for $330, without its original power supply, documentation or software. After bringing the machine to life, we identified the NEC D780C-1 processor, TMS9929A graphics controller and SN76489 sound chip. The startup display revealed 32 KB of system RAM and 16 KB of video RAM. We dumped all three 2764 EPROMs and examined both the original BASIC and floppy boot process. These dumps allowed us to develop our own emulator capable of running the original firmware. We also began adapting games from the Tatung Einstein TC-01. A converted version of Manic Miner was tested on the real Plantron, including its music and controls. The search for original system disks and complete disk interface documentation continues.
